This is a topic that's appeared in a few previous threads, but the recent barefeets benchmark tests comparing the slightly different configured 1GHz Quicksilver to the new 1 GHz dual, despite competing views these tests have generated, leave me and perhaps many of us wondering which is the better deal: a used dual GHz or its newer "equivalent"?
I just bought from an individual the older one w/3yrs AppleCare, a gig of memory, the NVIDEA GForce 4MX, and an external 40-gig Maxtor drive, all for the same amount as Apple's stock-configured 1 GHz dualie. There's no Apple Store near me to see the newer one up close.
I'm not a graphics arts designer or filmmaker but a cultural anthropologist/folklorist/professor who will be burning DVDs for classroom pursposes for the university where I teach. Also, I'd hope whatever I get will still hold its own a few years later.
I'd appreciate any thoughts on this, but in layman's terms. Apple techies expectedly insist that the newer model is the better way to go.

Prior to this G5 I'd primarily used laptops for years. Particularly like the ALPowerbook keyboard for feel. Can't stand the normal Apple keyboards, or any normal ones really. Got the icekey maybe 1 month ago. I absolutely love it. And you don't have that issue...the only one...with the Powerbook when you are typing in Word, and go to hit the right shift key, hit the up button, and delete the last line or two...hate that...have to undo quickly. Not a problem with the bigger Icekey keyboard.
Lol, never encounterd that problem. This forum really helps me too, since I plan on buying a pmac G5, but i've used laptops all my life & want the small & sleek laptop keyboard feel.

It's all going to be crowded, even KOP. Look at KOP on a normal day, and i dont know if any of you saw KOP on the iPhone launch. Just cuz its in a mall doesnt mean it will be any less crowded.

552,139 points sounds about right if your overclocked to 10.3ghz but if not then something is wrong :p
Anyways. Try and do a slight overclock to 3.5-8ghz and you'll be finishing bigadvs in no time. You need to fully complete 10 bigadv WUs to start getting their bonus. You will get 75k + points when you complete it. I get closely 90k points when I complete one, which is around 55k PPD.
Don't be afraid to OC, the 920s are the best and you can probably get close to 4ghz on air. See how far you can go on stock voltages. I got a really good chip as I'm at 4.2ghz @1.26v and it's 24/7 folding stable. Lower volts = lower temps and vice versa.

Try using passive mode. Issue "pasv" or "passive" in the command-line or find this option in your GUI clients.

I'm not necessarily waiting for Lion to come pre-installed, just waiting to see what Apple announces at WWDC.

I would like to create a simple iphone app for my sports team, all it would need to include is:
-twitter feed
-youtube feed
-rss news feed from the main site
-schedule
-map
Am I right in thinking that the only software I need is xcode 4 and a developers license to get the app into the app store?
I have some experience in coding, mainly HTML. From the screenshots of xcode 4, it looks similar to dreamweaver in that you can work in a GUI(add table by clicking on the table button) or by coding it.
Is it that simple, or am I getting it wrong?
Also, if I buy a developers license for a year, what happens after that year? Does the app stay in the store, but I cannot update it, or does it disappear from the app store?
Apologies if these are stupid questions, I have looked for an answer, but have come up with nothing so far.

TRIM enabler is a hack, and some people have reported that their read/write speeds have dropped significantly after installing it on their macs. I'm worried that it even does the job, but I am guessing it just changes the kernel so that instead of saying 'No' it says 'Yes' under TRIM support in SERIAL-ATA.
It's not just changing the No to a Yes. You can confirm TRIM is working by using hfsdebug and dd, with and without the patch. The beachballs people get could be due to an over aggressive use of TRIM by the current kext's, guess we'll find out sooner or later.

Considering you're running the WORST version security wise of phpBB I'd suggest you update, it's not hard no matter how many MODs you have, and if you're that worried about it I could even do it for you...

Security holes were the first major issue that we encountered... and now we have incredibly slow loading times and it is very hard to upgrade the software since we have made so many hacks to the default installation.
If you want lightweight and super fast, try PunBB (http://punbb.org).
If you want a powerful board with good support, use vBulleting or Invision Powerboard.

People forget that Apple has first and foremost always been a hardware company, one that produces electronic gadgets. Yes, they started off making computers, but even as early as the late 80s/early 90s, Apple was moving into other directions, such as the Newton (PDA) and the Pippin (video game console.) I don't think that a keynote dedicated to the iPhone is in any way a sign that Mac OS X is being "neglected." It's simply a presentation matter. It's easier to make a 90-minute keynote talking about new features in iPhone OS 2.0 than it is to say, "Snow Leopard will not have any major new features. Whoopee."
