I don't know how popular this service was, or how much material was on it, but it sounds to me as though iTunes U will not be an exact replacement. I hope that announcing this right before the school year starts for most teachers will not be putting too many people out...

I agree. Does iTunes U have the interaction like ALI does?

While the ALI program has been mostly invisible to the vast majority of users, it has long been a valued resource for a number of K-12 educators, assisting them with developing lesson plans, receiving technology advice, and networking.

If iTunes U doesn't support this, I'll be disappointed. These are very useful features.

none of them are quite good enough so I am waiting for a 2011 upgrade. THE imac and the mac pro I own are both much much much better for eye tv. they handle sports with no blurring. no mini I have owned was or is as good.

What about if you put a SSD in the Mini? Would that make a difference for EyeTV (I guess probably not if you were using the RAM buffer)?

If Apple does decide to release a 30 display, it would more then likely be aimed at the video or research markets, instead of the consumer market!!

But there are people how love to live lavish, so someone will purchase it!!!! ;) ;) :p

I bought a white iPhone 4 and have been disappointed in it's reception compared to my old black one. However call quality is great and the proximity sensor is 1000x better. I'm thinking about swapping it for another one but I'm not convinced anything is really wrong with it.

Now I'm wondering, they say the first 500 people there will get a free T-shirt, is that the first 500 that actually buy Leopard, or the first 500 that walk into the store? I ordered online, and because of the issues with not being sure whether MacMall is going to ship it and have it to me on Friday, I'm still teetering with cancelling the order, going to the store, buying it with my student discount and getting the free T-shirt.I'll be at the Palo Alto Store by about 2PM with my copy from a nearby college bookstore that I'm getting for $69 before 2PM. That should put me near the front of the queue.

I go to the store for the party social part and get in line even though I am not going to buy it there so I can get inside the store to play with it on one of the Macs inside. I'll have my old G4 PB with me and will be installing it while I'm in the queue from the copy I buy earlier at a college store nearby.

Pretty sure you have to buy a $129 copy to get the T-Shirt.

Everything ran smoothly for the... ohhh 4-5 years I've had Mac OS X. Then, one day a couple of weeks ago [using 10.3.7], my internet magically "shuts down" while my computer is on [this is the only pretext to my finder problem]. Nothing I could do could restart the internet: power cycling the modem/router, creating new connection settings, whatever. So then, I decided to restart. This is when my Finder hung at startup. Soooo, I let it sit there for a while and after about 5 min of not touching anything [not trying to relaunch Finder] it will startup. However, if the Finder hangs [for me] at startup, the internet will not work at all. Soooo crap.

So I went through my basic troubleshooting scheme, rebooting from a CD and running the likes of DiskWarrior, TechTool4 and DiskUtility. The first time I did this, everything went back to normal. However, after another 12 hours of the computer being on, the internet mysteriously cut out again, so I knew the Finder would hang if I rebooted [which it did]. So I did what I had done before but this time nothing worked. Soooo I tried a combo power-cycling modem/router-while-booted-from-cd-and-running-repairs thing and it worked. So I went along my merry way and it happened again. This time after about 24 hours.

So then I boot up from my Panther disk to run repairs from there. This time, I only have my modem unplugged [in all/any way it can be unplugged] and upon restart it worked fine. Good. Great. Dandy.

Then after another unknown amount of hours [2 days or so] it happens [i]again. Sigh.....

"OK, screw this", I thought. I'll just reinstall and everything will be OK. So I boot from my Panther disk, zero my boot drive and reformat to Journaling ["Fine, if Mac OS X would rather have journaling then it might make my life easier"]. I reinstall only the BSD Subsystem as an option so I only have to use 1 disk. Then I go about re-customizing my OS to my liking, adding this time only LittleSnitch, MenuMeters and TransperantDock [as opposed to all the crap I had on before, with around 10 "other" system preference panes and a "full" Applications folder]. Then after another 48 hours the system craps out. Just long enough after I had everything to my liking.

    "ARGH!"

So I go about reinstalling again, this time from a friends Panther disk, just to make sure. Instead of zeroing the drive again, I just erase and reinstall. Upon the very first restart, the Finder hung........ "Dear Mac Gods......"

So the next time, I try zeroing AND "8-way random write" to my drive just to make sure everything is nice and clear before I start again. Oh, by the way, did you know it takes around 13 hours to 8-way random write to a 30gb hard drive? Anyway, this time I get it started after and immediately [as I usually do] run permission repair and then update my OS. Then after reboot, I repair permissions again and proceed to get more updates. Oh, and at this time I had been recieving weird permission problems such as:

User differs on ., should be 0, owner is 501
Permissions differ on ., should be drwxrwxr-t , they are drwxrwxr-x
Owner and group corrected on .
    Permissions corrected on .

    and

Permissions differ on ./private/etc/slpsa.conf, should be -rwxr-xr-x , they are -rw-r--r--
Owner and group corrected on ./private/etc/slpsa.conf
    Permissions corrected on ./private/etc/slpsa.conf

I repair my permissions regularly and have never seen either of those before.

Let's see.... where was I.... oh, 3rd reinstall I think.

Ok, so I continue to update my system [this install was when 10.3.8 came out, before the full combo update] and get it to 10.3.8. I happily chug along thinking 10.3.8 was a god send, and go forth and install LittleSnitch and MenuMeters [two things I can't live without] directly from the developer sites. Then the problem happens AGAIN after another 24 hours or so of no restart after installing LS.

So now I'm really angry. I search Apple's boards and google the problem to find that it's happened to more than a few people. They have suggestions such as to reset pram, delete user and system caches and delete certain user/system preferences. "How could I have a corrupt cache or pref on a fresh install?", I think. So I reboot and let the system hang until it finally boots up [but with no internet access] and I enable invisible items and proceed to trash all my caches [only this so far]. Since some are still in use, I have to reboot to empty the trash. So I do so. The Finder hangs the next start up, but I figure that's just a warmup for the files I just deleted. So I restart again. Finder still hangs. Luckily I had to leave at this point, so I keep my system running, getting ready to rein

I have SGP films for my iPhone 4 and love them so I'd assume these would be great too.

Apologies, the site is my own and is written in ASP. so no blogging etc, essentially something that will allow me to edit HTML page but with the ability to FTP download and reupload

If it's written in ASP then that means it's dynamic. Not going to be a whole lot you can do without using visual studio or something like frontpage.

I don't know of any WYSIWYG editors for the Mac that are familiar with ASP syntax.

That's an interesting and possibly controversial statement.

Putting Macromedia to one side... what beef do you have with Adobe?
Any apps in particular? And where does the past come into it?

Only curious 'cos Adobe are the people I rely on to get work done...

The frameworks that Adobe use for their applications are far older than those that Macromedia use but both are rooted in the 1980s and are a significant CPU drain compared to techniques for modern Mac OS X software. Apple was unwise to allow the same core of an application to run on Mac OS 8.x, 9.x and X. Even AppleWorks has two separate applications which call various Carbon modules. What works well on one operating system is counterproductive on the other.

Considering that Adobe converted their software to run on Mac OS X, they should have used Carbon Events to allow Mac OS X to use the idle time for other processes rather than using the old event loop. It is apparent from the way their applications use CPU while idle that they have not chosen the more efficient path but only the more expedient one.

Part of the problem with converted applications is MetroWerks' PowerPlant framework, which Macromedia and many, many others use. It has used the old event loop too. However, they redeemed themselves by creating PowerPlant X, which uses Carbon Events. I believe that the patched versions of Macromedia's applications are using PowerPlant X but are simply inefficiently coded.

Sorry to those who have been reading this for the past two years. It's an old, sad story that should have changed by now. I want to say something nice instead.

Here's to Brad and Ryan! :) They're the good guys.

I used an AExpress to extend my AExtreme wifi. At first I misunderstood and ran a wire to the AE and plugged it in ethernet and told it to extend the wifi. Boy things got fouled up then. I found out after a quick phone call with Apple that I didn't need to run ethernet to the AExpress for it to extend wifi. So I got it set up and then walked upstairs to the hallway between the kids' rooms where they were having spotty wifi coverage. I plugged in the AExpress and it went "green" after only a few moments.

It would be nice if these devices could extend on anothers' wifi but I don't mind having our house "all Apple" as our experience has been relatively trouble free since doing so. I went through several brands of routers before settling on AE. For a while, I even had a Time Capsule as a router. When the ability to set up a guest network became available, I sprung for an AExtreme despite the fact I already had a TC. Past routers we had tried include a Linksys WRT54GS (v5), Zyxel and several others I can't remember. The only things they did better than Apple gear is you could set them up using any web browser and there were a few more flexible settings, but everything else about them was awful.

We use ComCrap internet and the cable modem knocks all our routers for a loop whenever ComCrap decides it's time for us to get a new ip address. All our routers that is until I started using Apple gear. What was once a monthly and sometimes biweekly power cycle ritual has only happened once in 18 months since dumping those other routers. And the one time it did happen, ComCrap admitted they had taken down the service for one of their digital channel scrambling rituals and knocked hundreds of customers off the net.

And West Farms technically is in Farmington, not West Hartford. I know it gets confusing- West Hartford, Farmington, and New Britain. Kinda like that blur of Simsbury, Canton, and Avon.

Yeah, it does get a bit confusing at times. There's parts of the mall that's in Farmington & West Hartford. It's kinda like my college. It's in West Hartford, Bloomfield & Hartford all at the same time :p

Ok, so it isn't really possible to build a complete website from scratch but I do want something that would allow me to make small changes. Basically I'm looking for something that will let me FTP to my site, download a page, edit it and then upload the changed page.

Is there anything out there that people can recommend?

    Thanks

You need to provide a lot more detail than what you're currently providing. Are you using blogging software? Is this at a conventional web host or something like Blogger?

For example, if you're using Wordpress, you can't just do what you want. Templates are used to generate the site on the fly each time it's loaded. You'd have to edit the templates, which aren't actually what you see on the page when you load it. It could be a combination of 4 templates that generate one page that you see.

If it's flat HTML then yes, there are tools out there that can help you. But you need to give up some details so we can even tell you if it's possible.

    Hey everyone,

I read most threads in this forum about overheating, but it turned out that's not at all a concern in a daily basis. What is a concern, however, is the instant fan noise whenever the laptop gets under load.

It is constant when running games (always at 6000 rpm). I've tried Call of Duty IV, and Starcraft II. Also Crysis II via Boot Camp.
    It may happen under Facetime.
It may happen if you leave a flash animation running in a tab.
it may happen with AirVideo Server (serving to an iPod).

Turns out there's really no middle ground for this fan. It is either audible, or isn't. With 2000 rpm you know it's there, but frankly that's barely a concern. Sometimes it turns on suddenly and goes to maximum speed in seconds, stays there for a minute or two, then drops down.

So I guess that ANY heavy load will come with fan noise. Here's what I need to ask then.

    - Is this a given for Sandy Bridge?
    - Do you have this kind of noise in your C2D MacBooks (Air included)?
    - Is it better when you have more fans involved (larger MBP's, iMacs..)?

Like I said, it hasn't been that much a concern for most uses, because they stay under the radar. The MBP gets hot but that's not even a problem. What I get is there is a clear threshold between what you can do (silently) and what produces noise. I stopped playing games because I really cannot do with that much noise. Turns out the GPU can roll with a lot of games, but I thought the noise wasn't included. Plus I'm afraid I'll damage the laptop if the fan is on for so long.

I'm thinking I'd rather have lower processing power and silent operation. I can take a longer iPhoto import if I don't hear this fan. Help?

I am going to be picking up my new 27" iMac at the store tomorrow. For the past 4 years I have been using a 24" Dell at 1920x1200. Since the 27" iMac is 2560x1140, do most people run it at native or something lower?

I am looking forward to the increased screen size so I can have more rows/columns viewable, but not sure I want them any smaller.

I sit about 24-30" away from the screen.

How would the 27" look at something lower?
